Joan Rivers: I'm finally quitting Botox

There's never a dull moment when Joan Rivers visits. Hoda and Kathie Lee even joked about putting her on a delay Tuesday in case she should say something extra Joan Rivers-y. But she surprised everybody by keeping it clean, and announcing that she'd quit Botox.

Childhood Obesity Epidemic | Team Excellence

Why in the world are we letting our children grow up obese and ill? What?s wrong with us???Do people really want their children to grow up obese, exhausted, depressed and extremely ill? Why are we teaching our kids lifestyle habits that will condemn them to this? It?s unacceptable, lazy and ignorant.

This is a subject that really gets me up on my soap box. (Obviously.) And being so blatant about it may tick some people off, but the truth is the truth here folks. Furthermore, the overall solution for many children out there is so simple. A few easy steps would right so many wrongs for our precious kiddos.

#1: PARENTS MUST CHANGE FIRST!!!
Lead by example! People can?t expect their kids to eat carrots on the treadmill while they ingest ho-hos in front of the TV. If parents don?t take health seriously for themselves, then neither will their children.

#2: TOSS THE JUNK FOOD!!!

Throw away the garbage and commit 100% to purchasing only nutritious foods. Don?t know what to buy? Easy enough. Meat, seafood, green salads, fruits and veggies. God made these things just for us to eat, and built our bodies to flourish on these foods. If you think you can?t afford it, then think this: Can you afford for yourself and your children to be ill for the rest of your lives?

#3: GET ACTIVE!!!

Seriously people, there is so much fun to be had hanging out, doing active things together with your family and/or friends. This is how you develop meaningful relationships with family and friends, by actually spending time with them. You don?t learn what makes people tick by playing video games.

At church on Sunday the message was about spending quality alone time praying and developing a relationship with God the way that Jesus Christ did. You don?t necessarily need a buddy to take a walk and pray, and this is something kids should learn from us as well.

#4: THROW AWAY ALL THE VIDEO GAMES IN YOUR HOME!!!

If you are met with whining and crying, then put your foot down! Kids would rather spend time with their parents. They may not think so at first sight of the video games going out the door, but it?s actually true! Would you want to be 30 years old, reflecting on a childhood of video games or reflecting on a childhood of family times? Video games drive me bonkers. I?m one of those weird kids that was raised without them and played outside. My parents were crazy, I know. They thought kids had fun running, jumping, and exploring! I have so many awesome childhood memories, none of which involve video games. On the cold winter days, my parents and I played board games. Together. Not in front of the TV. I know, even weirder. They should have been locked up for raising me in such a manner. We rarely ate out, and even more rarely ate fast food. I could count on one hand the number of times I had fast food before age eighteen. They made me hoe the weeds in the garden that we ate out of. They made me do chores and have responsibilities. I cannot hardly believe I survived.

P.S. I still love fruits, vegetables and playing outdoors. My kids love fruits, vegetables and playing outdoors. Good habits lead to more good habits. And I don?t want to hear any excuses about not being raised with good habits. Educate yourself and change. Today.

P.P.S. My three-year-old scrubs floors, hoes the garden (it?s a plastic hoe), has chores and will literally choose grapes over cake on any day. There will NEVER be video games in our home. We limit his TV. When he sees someone drinking pop and asks for some, I say no. Lock me up.

P.P.P.S. You should read Steph?s article on Paleo. It?s a two-part, catch them both!

Former MLB star Kent to join 'Survivor'?

Is Survivor about to get its first player who has his own bobblehead doll? According to the site Survivor Fever, Jeff Kent will be among the contestants when the venerable game show kicks off its 25th season (over 12 years) in September. Also on board, according to Survivior Fever, will be Miss Teen USA 2010 Angelia Layton and (the big news) Lisa Welchel ? better known as Blair from The Facts of Life. The gang will be in the Caramoan Islands, the Philippines, this time.

Kent, 44, was the National League MVP in 2000 and played in the 2002 World Series for the Giants. But more importantly he was a contestant on Superstars in 2009, so there?s the athletic game show background. He also came out against gay marriage in the Prop. 8 debate in 2008, which also must have been very attractive to the Survivor producers. They love stirring the pot by cramming the island with a bunch of divergent viewpoints.

As for me, my unblemished record of never seeing an entire episode of Survivor is expected to continue. The only way to break it is if they had both Kent and Barry Bonds on the same season.

Iraqi Military Beard Ban Stirs Religion Debate

Reuters ? An Iraqi government decree banning soldiers and police from wearing beards on duty has revived a debate over religious practices in a country where sectarian divisions between Shi?ite and Sunni still fester close to the surface.

Iraq has long allowed police and soldiers to wear beards to a certain length, but in April the interior ministry began ordering that they must be clean-shaven in the name of the ?public interest?.

Wearing a beard is seen in many parts of the Muslim world as a sign of piety or a symbol of radical Islamism, depending on its style. In Iraq, beards are sometimes ?

Facebook ? Employers may review unprotected profiles
http://www.securitynewsdaily.com/2001-personal-secrets-facebook.html

QUOTE:? Whether you?re looking for a job, or already have one, there?s one thing you can be sure of: It?s not only your Facebook ?friends? who are looking at your social media profile? Those doing the hiring freely admit they search potential job candidates? Facebook profiles. If you think your current co-workers, employees or boss aren?t stopping in for an undetected peek at your profile every so often, you?re deluding yourself.???So what?? you think. ?There?s nothing on my Facebook profile that I?m ashamed of.? Are you sure? You might be surprised how much of what?s on your Facebook page is inappropriate for work.

Here are just a few of the things you?re revealing about yourself that you might not have considered.

1. Your age. Even if you didn?t use your real age when you signed up for Facebook, it?s pretty easy to figure out.

2. Your political beliefs. Anyone with a little common sense knows that talking politics at work is a bad idea, but anyone checking out your Facebook page could probably pretty easily figure out where you stand.

3. Your personal life. What?s the point of putting on a power suit for work if everyone in your office can see photos of you in your pajamas on Christmas morning on your Facebook page?

4. Your childhood. those photos your mom keeps posting of you as a kid in the bathtub are cute, too. While they?re not exactly blackmail material, there?s little doubt they?ll help undermine your efforts to command much respect around the office.

5. Your religious beliefs. What you believe is no one else?s business. But that doesn?t mean they won?t hold it against you.

6. Your work alliances. Even if you think you?re good at playing office politics, odds are your Facebook page tells the real truth about who you like and who you don?t.

Jared Bernstein: The Tax Reform Trap

A couple of my CBPP colleagues have written an important paper -- a warning, really -- on tax reform. Chuck Marr and Chye-Ching Huang describe a trap that almost every tax reform effort I've heard about in recent months risks falling into. It's critical that we wrap our heads around this, because major tax reforms are rare and if one is coming -- and it might well be -- we can't afford to blow it.

This is their warning:

-the mantra of all tax reform initiatives these days is "lower the rates, broaden the base" where the latter means ending certain tax expenditures (a wide variety of tax breaks and credits ranging from the Earned Income Credit -- a wage subsidy for low wage workers -- to the reduced rate on capital gains).

-but most of the actual reform proposals -- like those of Rep Paul Ryan, Gov Romney, or the Bowles-Simpson commission -- cut rates first, with an agreement to find the base broadeners later (Bowles-Simpson, to be fair, included "illustrative" cuts, but the members of the commission were unable to reach agreement on them).

Therefore, TAX REFORM THAT LOWERS RATES WITHOUT FIRST LOCKING IN HIGHER REVENUES WILL VERY LIKELY FAIL TO RAISE THOSE REVENUES. The sequencing of tax reform therefore must be:

1) choose a revenue target, one that reliably reduces the deficit once the economy is back on track;
2) figure out the rates and base needed to hit that target;
3) ensure that a) a majority of policy makers accept the base broadeners and b) the changes do not make the code less progressive;
4) only then, once progressive base-broadeners and a deficit-reducing revenue targets are locked in, should lower rates be considered. If the lower rates violate any of the prior conditions, they must be rejected.

Reading through Chuck and CC's paper, I cannot over-emphasize the importance of this sequencing. In a way, it's as simple as spinach first, then dessert. But once you open your eyes to this problem, you see it everywhere. Even the White House, folks who clearly understand the need for new revenues, gets it wrong.

I wrote a variation of this earlier, under the rubric of the D.C. Dodge. But my colleagues add a lot more meat to these bones. A few of their other key points:

-many of the "lower rates, broaden base" plans claim to be revenue neutral. Um...neutrality is not the correct goal when we need net new revs;

-across the board rate cuts, ala Gov Romney's plan, are regressive, delivering larger tax cuts to those at the top of the income scale (see CM/CCH's figure 2);

-base broadening through cuts in tax expenditures is WAY harder than you'd think from hearing policy makers blithely invoke it:

...curtailing tax expenditures, especially if that must produce deficit reduction and offset the cost of large and regressive reductions in tax rates, is far harder than many proponents suggest. First, there are immense political and other obstacles to raising very large amounts of revenue through tax expenditure reform. Second, cutting tax rates reduces the revenue gains from base broadening [because lower rates mean smaller deductions; thus, ending those deductions raises less rev]. And third, it's even harder to overhaul tax expenditures in a way that simultaneously offsets the cost of rate cuts, raises significant additional revenue for deficit reduction, and maintains or improves the progressivity of the tax code -- especially if proponent insist on maintaining the preferential rate for capital gains.

Chuck and CC conclude that tax reform, done badly with the wrong sequencing, could end up exacerbating both inequality and the budget deficit. And if you've spent any of your time in this debate in D.C. in recent years, you know that the likelihood of getting caught in the very trap they elaborate here is great.

So read this and be forewarned. We've got enough problems without getting our fiscal legs caught in a trap.

3 Connected Diseases ? Diabetes, Gout and Kidney Disease ...

Do What it Takes to Keep Parents Healthy

These 3 diseases (diabetes, gout and kidney disease) have three things in common that makes it more likely for one to experience them at the same time.? And those common denominators are bad diet, lack of exercise and poor blood circulation.? An interesting aspect to this 3-way disease connection; studies show if you have high uric acid concentrations in the blood you are more likely to experience gout, ?have a 20% increase risk of acquiring diabetes and 40% risk of kidney disease.? It appears regardless of what disease comes first, it can lead to the other.? And for many, all 3 diseases are treated at the same time.

Okay, we?ll break this down a bit to understand how these 3 diseases could come about within the same window of time.

First of all we know a symptom of diabetes is poor blood circulation.? This occurs because blood sugars are not being processed adequately through the liver and muscles. ?When the insulin hormone is not produced at the intended levels a whole list of medical complications can ensue.? This is also referred to as insulin resistance in the diabetic world.? When our bodies accumulate high levels of sugar in our blood the bodies reacts negatively by causing many different types of medical complications due to the high blood sugars impact on the body?s circulation and overall metabolism.

When blood circulation is impacted, this effect is especially hard on the heart, kidney and blood vessel walls.? Other damages that often occur due to poor circulation are the impacts specifically in the nervous system, eyes and feet.? For example, it is not uncommon for those with severe diabetic ailments specific to those areas of the body to lose eyesight, or a foot to gangrene.

And since circulation is greatly impacted for those with diabetes, they are also more likely to experience gout (a painful joint condition) and kidney stones.? This is because the uric acid builds up on joints and within the kidneys for lack of good circulation.? And without good circulation the body simply can?t detoxify itself optimally.? This lack of circulation is the domino effect that creates higher risk for kidney stones and chronic gout conditions.

However, just because you?re diabetic does not mean you?ll get gout and kidney stones. Instead you should think of it this way, you increase your odds of all 3 diseases presenting themselves at some point in time if diet and activity habits don?t change.? Also, acute and chronic gout seem to mostly occur based on a diet that is uric acid rich from consuming too much alcohol and red meats.

Since poor circulation also impacts the kidneys and urine function, these filters and waste removal systems to detoxify the body are not operating at 100%.? So in this case the uric acids in the blood build up and tend to anchor its crystal formations in the ankles, toes and yes the kidneys.? And if you?ve ever talked to someone that has passed a stone, you?d understand this is not the type of pain you?d want to experience.? I?ve known people that have experienced passing a stone and they immediately changed their diets, activity levels and drink a lot more water throughout the day.? It was an eye opener for them for sure.

The formation of these stones can occur if urine flow is too little for lack of proper hydration, or too highly concentrated with uric acid due to bad diet.? Other factors that increase risk of uric acid stone formation in the kidneys: as stated, an alcohol and animal rich diet cause a metabolic disorder within the urine system and also causes other health risks throughout the body, i.e., anemia, insulin resistance, blood cancers and chronic diarrhea.? It is also found that type 2 diabetics tend to have a high acidic urine concentration that leaves them vulnerable to uric acid stones and crystallized uric acid formation at the lower limb joints.

If you?ve been clinically identified with high uric acid levels in the blood, be sure to drink plenty of water daily and take prescribed medications.? It is recommended to consume 8-8oz glasses of water a day.? By doing so you can better remove the uric acid waste product from the blood through more frequent urination and stools, thereby also preventing kidney stone formation and maintaining clean bodily filters.

Who are the most likely candidates to acquire gout?? Gout can occur at any age and is common for those in their senior years.? Gout experienced during the senior years is mostly due to lack of mobility and decreased water intake.? However, even if you have no gout, are not obese and don?t have diabetes, but your uric acids in the blood are constantly high, you?re at risk for heart attack, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, kidney stones, cardiovascular disease and yes even death if progression of disease(s) is not treated.? Another common disease that can bring on these 3 interacting diseases is obesity! If your considered clinically obese, you?re likely to become a type II diabetic if not already.

Any time you have less circulation in any organ it can also sustain permanent damage.? Like your bodies muscles, organs depend on oxygen enriched blood through good blood circulation to maintain healthy tissue.? Since your kidneys and liver scrub your system free of food and air toxins, it would be wise to maintain ?optimum blood circulation and blood volume? through good preventative ill-health practices such as daily exercise, proper diet and hydrate well throughout the day with water.

If you?re interested in a natural diet solution to prevent gout, then you?ll benefit to know that the cayenne and garlic spices in your foods can help you to achieve this goal.? That?s right these spices are very healthy for you.? So insure you incorporate these spices into your daily diet for preventative measures.? There are also high concentrate supplements with these spices included that can be very helpful in the prevention of gout.

It is also reassuring to know that if you?re being treated for diabetes and/or high levels of uric acid-gout, you?ll also be treated with the same treatment options since they are so closely related.? Let your doctor?s know immediately if you suffer from diabetes, gout and/or kidney stone symptoms, or suffer from obesity.

And as you already understand, for prevention and to improve upon you health if you suffer from any of these diseases; diet, exercise and ample water intake throughout the day will serve your body well.

SPCA: Remember Pets On Hot Days - Riverhead, NY Patch

With temperatures spiking, pets, like humans, can feel the heat.

According to Roy Gross, chief of the Suffolk County SPCA, hot weather can be dangerous for pets, who can suffer from dehydation and heat stroke.

Gross said it's critical to remember never to leave pets unattended inside a parked car, even with the windows open, where temperatures can reach levels of 120 degrees in just minutes. An animal's temperature can climb in just 15 minutes, Gross said.

?"Your pet can quickly suffer brain damage or die from heatstroke when trapped in these high temperatures," Gross said, adding that dogs can only cool themselves by panting and sweating through their paw pads.

Pets, he said, can also become dehydrated quickly, so it's imporant to give them fresh water and provide shady areas so they can stay out of the sun.

Warning signs that indicate a pet is in danger include?difficulty breathing with excessive panting, weakness and possible seizures.

If a pet exhibits any unusual symptoms, take the animal directly to a veterinarian, he said.

Gross also urged anyone who sees a pet inside a vehicle on a hot day should take down the car's make, model, color and plate number, then call the police or the Suffolk County SPCA, who have the authority to rescue the pet.

Horses, Gross noted, should also be considered -- they feel the heat, too, and need to be kept hydrated and out of the sun.

Entrepreneur's Quirky journey to success

Even after raising $40 million as a tech entrepreneur, Ben Kaufman, 25, still says his first round of funding was the most difficult.

It wasn't just because he was fresh out of high school, having celebrated only 18 birthdays at that point. It was because he had to convince his parents to raise the $185,000 he needed by remortgaging their Long Island home ? not to pay for college, mind you, but to back a kid's dream of producing a really cool pair of headphones.

"I always say it was the hardest convincing I ever had to do with any investor," Kaufman recalls. Before taking that money and heading to China to find a manufacturer, all he had was a prototype concocted out of ribbon and gift wrap.

But armed with that prototype and the backing of his folks, Kaufman went on to create the Song Sling, a retractable lanyard headphone. His first company, mophie, is now a near-ubiquitous brand in the increasingly crowded portable battery pack market ? all the more popular as social network and location-based apps drain the batteries of smart phones and other mobile devices. Mophie went on to win Macworld's Best of Show award in 2006 for another product, an iPod Shuffle case that integrated a bottle opener and key chain.

But when Macworld rolled around the following year, Kaufman decided to do something different. Rather than bringing a new product to unveil, he used his booth space to create a sort of mini-industrial design center. He handed out pen and paper, asking people to submit ideas for iPhone accessories, and clipped those sketches to a clothesline. With 100 or so worthy concepts, he scanned the images, uploaded them to the Web and asked online users to vote for their favorites. Prototyping began the third day of the show, leading to what would become mophie's next product line. This single experience led to Kaufman?s next big move: Selling his company and using that money to develop the technology that would become the backbone of Quirky. A supercharged online evolution of Kaufman?s Macworld experiment, Quirky creates what it calls open-source invention and product development. ?

For $10, inventors can submit product ideas to be vetted by Quirky?s community of about 221,000 users, who are encouraged to vote for their favorites. The top-ranked ideas get reviewed by Quirky's in-house team of experts, who pick one or two products each week based on design potential, uniqueness and viability. The entire process takes place in Quirky?s 30,000-square-foot New York City facility and is live streamed to the Web, all in the spirit of transparency. The ideas that move on go through a series of development phases ? research, design, branding, engineering, etc. ? before being brought to market. Typically, it's about 120 to 180 days before they end up the shelves of Bed Bath and Beyond, Target, Barnes & Noble and other stores. That?s when the inventors who originally submitted the ideas reap their rewards, generally earning about 35 percent of revenues.

Quirky celebrated its third birthday in June and is projected to bring in $20 million this year, a dramatic jump from the roughly $6.5 to $7 million last year, thanks to a growing product line and new distributors. One of the most popular gadgets to date is the red dot design award-winning Pivot Power, a flexible power strip that adjusts so bulky AC adapters don't block other outlets, that has paid about $290,000 to Jake Zien, a design student whose product has sold more than 255,000 units to date.

"It's the best feeling in the world to walk to a new friend's house, and you look around, behind the TV and see Pivot Power," Kaufman says. Yet even as Quirky's No. 1 cheerleader, he says he's "super weird when it comes to using [his] own products."

"Not because I don't believe in it," he says, reassuringly, "but because it's like a band wearing its own T-shirt. It's kind of awkward."

?
Still, there are exceptions. A favorite of Kaufman?s is one of Quirky's earliest products. PowerCurl, which has earned its inventor about $82,000 so far, is a clip-on to Apple's MagSafe power adapters. The accessory makes it easy to wind up the cables, simplifying the packing and unpacking process. "I use that everyday," Kaufman says.

Those brick-and-mortar retail partners are key to Quirky?s success, driving 85 percent of the company's revenue, with the rest coming from online sales through Quirky.com, Amazon, ThinkGeek, Fab.com and other e-sellers. While Kaufman says his retailer partners might be considered "old-school type of companies," convincing them to come on board wasn't too difficult. "A lot of what we do plays directly to their needs and where they're going," he says. "For the most part, they buy into the brand and let us drive what sort of products will be successful."

At any one time, the Quirky team juggles about 120 products across the development cycle, with another 75 or so on sale. "It's a lot, but the process is what makes it so palatable."

He's referring to the Quirky Process that encompasses the steps from idea submission to store sales. At the heart of it is the Reddit-reminiscent style of community voting that can propel an idea to stardom or leave it languishing. The inventor gets the biggest piece of pie, but along the way, the influencers who vote on successful ideas, help come up with names, pick color palettes or contribute to the final product in some way get a small royalty stake as well.

The technology that has driven Quirky hasn't changed much since the company's founding in 2009. But as it looks to the future, Quirky has plans to move more manufacturing operations stateside.

"Whenever we start a product, we always think we'd love to make it here," Kaufman says. For its latest project, the team decided to work with factories in New Jersey, Vermont, Maine and North Carolina to produce Crates, DIY modular storage that hark back to dorm living.

"Crates is a great example," Kaufman says. "It's the reason why we were able to make the leap." Since Crates was produced in the U.S., from a logistical standpoint, freight made the storage units cost effective. The big expenses were with set up: tools, packaging, labor. "But as long as you're willing to make the upfront investment, the other stuff becomes more palpable," he adds. After establishing these manufacturing partners, the cost to produce in the U.S. goes down over time.

Debuting mid-June, Crates is Quirky's most recent and ambitious project to date. Looking back on the last three years, Kaufman calls it a "crazy journey."

"This started in my apartment in the East Village, which was above a dive bar. I had this crazy idea to launch one brand new product every week, and we did that."

Wizards Pre-NBA Draft Workouts: Sam Cassell vs. Hollis Thompson

Wizards Pre-NBA Draft Workouts: Sam Cassell vs. Hollis Thompson

Former Georgetown Hoya Hollis Thompson was all of two-years old when Sam Cassell made his NBA debut with the Houston Rockets in November of 1993.

So, with Cassell serving as an assistant coach with the Washington Wizards, who have been putting 2012 NBA Draft hopefuls through workouts, including Thompson last Thursday, we are given a chance to crunch the age numbers as the two faced-off in a drill on the Verizon Center practice court.

Cassell will turn 43-years old this November, and Thompson turned 21 this past April; the difference between them ? 21 years, 4 months and 16 days ? is currently greater than Thompson?s age.

The drill was defensive in nature. Participating players were required to rotate properly on help defense as the ball was passed around. The final component involved the main defender rotating from helping in the paint to closing out on a wing player in the corner (Cassell) using proper technique.

From there, Cassell had free reign to relish the opportunity of scoring on a kid at least 50-percent less in age. And this wasn?t the first time Cassell has dueled with kids ? previous battles have come against the likes of?John Wall, Nick Young, JaVale McGee, and Andray Blatche ? and it likely won?t be the last.

Cassell?s first bucket on Thompson came thanks to his expectantly unexpected craftiness, a scoop shot under Thompson?s obliviously defending arms. The 21-year old demanded another chance, and Cassell scored on him again; this time with a tough shot off the backboard glass ? he called it.

?Hey GM! You got this on tape?? yelled Cassell up toward the onlooking Wizards brass, media members other viewing parties. Cassell?s question came after he put on a display of his 42-year old prowess with a strut. Sam I Am may not have invented NBA swagger, but he?s certainly in the Hall of Fame.

Thompson didn?t strike out a third time, however. He closed out on Cassell tight and used his 6-foot-8 frame to bother the one-time All-Star, three-time NBA Champion into a bricked miss.

But hey, two out of three ain?t bad for an old man.

Church abuse victim on trial for beating priest

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) ? Northern California prosecutors concede the man on trial in the beating of an aging priest was sexually abused by the Jesuit, but told a jury Wednesday that still did not give William Lynch the right to take the law into in his own hands.

Lynch, 44, is accused of beating the Rev. Jerold Lindner in May 2010 at a Los Gatos retirement home for priests near San Jose. He has pleaded not guilty and his trial began with opening statements Wednesday.

Lynch says Lindner raped him and his 4-year-old brother during a 1975 camping trip in Northern California.

Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney Vicki Gemetti began her 20-minute opening by displaying a blown-up photograph of a bruised and bloodied Lindner slumped in a chair. She implored jurors to focus solely on the assault, which she said Lynch "undeniably" committed.

"The defendant beat this man up because he was angry and he wanted revenge," she said. "The defendant planned and executed a violent attack against the man who molested him 30 years ago."

But Gemetti said the molestation was not a defense to the charges. She called Lynch's actions illegal "vigilante" justice.

Lynch's lawyer Pat Harris displayed photos of the two brothers from around the time of the camping trip during his opening statement.

"This case did not begin in 2010," Harris said. "It began on a holiday weekend in the mid-1970s."

Harris denied that Lynch intended to assault the priest when he showed up at the retirement home. Harris didn't go into details during his own 20-minute opening statement, but promised the jury Lynch would testify and explain his actions.

Harris also said he expects the priest to lie when he is called to testify. Lindner could be called to the witness stand as early as Wednesday afternoon and is expected to deny the rapes occurred. Harris told the jurors to take the priest's credibility into account when deciding the case.

Earlier, the prosecutor also conceded she expected the priest to lie and deny committing the sexual assaults. Nonetheless, she said "it is unmistakeable he was beaten" and that Lynch is guilty of assault.

Gemetti showed jurors a short video clip of an emotional Lynch describing the abuse he allegedly suffered at Lindner's hands in a tent during a church camping trip when he was seven. On the video, Lynch said he felt it was his moral duty to attack the priest.

"I'm empowered," Lynch said. "I'm in charge of my destiny."

Lynch is charged with felony counts of assault and elder abuse.

In the months since his arrest, Lynch has refused to discuss a plea deal with prosecutors and has grown intent on using his own legal trouble to try Lindner in the court of public opinion in a potentially explosive proceeding. It's likely to also include testimony from more of Lindner's alleged victims.

Lynch faces up to four years in prison if convicted on all charge.

During the lunch break, several protestors carrying large signs decrying the sexual abuse of children by Catholic clergy demonstrated outside the courthouse. Dozens of spectators were denied entrance to the 66-seat courtroom after it quickly filled to capacity Wednesday morning.

The judge overseeing the case recently ruled that Harris can ask the priest about Lynch's allegations during cross-examination. If Lindner denies the accusations, Harris can call up to three other witnesses who claim they were also molested by Lindner as children, including Lynch's younger brother.

The Lynches, who were 7 and 4 at the time, were raped in the woods and forced to have oral sex with each other while Lindner watched, according to a civil lawsuit. Lindner has been accused of abuse by nearly a dozen people, including his own sister and nieces and nephews, but was never criminally charged because the allegations were too old.

Lindner hung up Monday when The Associated Press called him for comment. He has previously denied abusing the Lynch boys and said in a deposition from the late 1990s that he didn't recall the siblings. The brothers settled with the Jesuits of the California Province for $625,000 in 1998.

Getting Lindner into court ? even as a victim ? has helped Lynch find the peace of mind he's been searching for his whole life, he said.

"I don't want to go to jail but I've come to realize that this whole thing is really bigger than me and the way that I've chosen to handle this is to make a statement," Lynch told the AP. "I'm prepared to take responsibility for anything I've been involved in. I'm willing to do it. I think it's a small sacrifice to get Father Jerry into court."

Even if the molestation allegations are true, the judge's order only allows the defense to ask general questions about sexual abuse for the purpose of challenging Lindner's credibility as a witness. Other defense witnesses who allege abuse by the priest can't be questioned about specific details that could inflame the jury.

It's unlikely testimony about Lynch's abuse allegations could tip the case in his favor ? but not impossible, said Jody Armour, a professor at the University of Southern California's Gould School of Law who specializes in criminal law and social justice issues.

Jurors will have to be reminded not to be swayed by their prejudices or by any sympathy they may feel for Lynch.

"These are some of the toughest cases in criminal law," Armour said. "Even though that jury will be told, 'Don't think about this, this is not evidence, it just goes to credibility,' how are people going to keep those two things separate in their mind?"

Police said they connected Lynch to the May 2010 attack using phone records. A half hour before the beating, a man identifying himself as "Eric" called the rest home and said someone would arrive shortly to inform Lindner of a family member's death.

When Lindner showed up in the lobby, Lynch asked the 65-year-old priest if he recognized him. After the priest said he did not, Lynch began punching him, according to a police account. On a 911 tape, the assailant can be heard yelling, "Turn yourself in or I'll (expletive) come back and kill you," as a receptionist speaks to a dispatcher.

Lindner was able to drive himself to the hospital and has since recovered.

Lindner was removed from ministry and placed at the Los Gatos retirement home in 2001. He was named in two additional lawsuits for abuse between 1973 and 1985, according to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Those cases were included in the record $660 million settlement between the church and more than 550 plaintiffs in 2007.

Even if he is convicted, Lynch hopes that facing the priest in court will help him deal with the demons that he said have held him hostage for years. He has battled depression and alcoholism, attempted suicide and his marriage failed.

"My expectations are realistic," Lynch said, "but I'm also coming into this for the first time sort of in control of my life."

Hands On With Microsoft Surface for Windows RT [Microsoft]

Microsoft's event today was long on promise and short on specs. RAM? We dunno. Processor speed? We dunno. Price? We dunno. Release date? We dunno. Socialist election sweep gives Hollande clear mandate to push eurozone growth

The Socialist party and its allies garnered more than enough seats for an absolute majority in parliament, allowing French President Fran?ois Hollande to pursue his policies full-throttle.

The French Socialists and President Fran?ois Hollande won a resounding victory in the final round of parliamentary elections last night, giving Mr. Hollande a clear field to champion growth policies during a euro crisis that has emphasized German-led austerity.

The Socialists and affiliates won some 300-307 seats in the National Assembly, far exceeding the 289 required for an outright majority, and giving the Socialists, a party declared moribund four years ago, its best position in France since the 1980s.

?Full Power for Mr. Hollande,? the banner head in Le Monde shouted out today.

Socialist senior ministers said today they would immediately roll up their sleeves to implement a delicate mixture of cuts and tax reforms to achieve both a balanced budget and more support for jobs and schools.

Hollande, elected May 6, has already tweaked France?s new age-62 retirement policy to allow those starting work at 18 to retire at 60, for example. But the new government has largely waited on the result of two rounds of lower house elections this month to swing into action. ?

The election outcome leaves the Socialists with the presidency, the senate and the lower house, as well as 21 of 22 regions and many of the largest cities.?In addition, Socialist allies, including the Green party, surged to some 20 seats, making them proportionally the biggest winner of yesterday's poll.

?It was important to offer Hollande a large majority to make concrete the results of the presidential elections,? Socialist lawmaker J?r?me Guedj said last night as the results became clear.

The French right, represented mainly by former president Nicolas Sarkozy's United Movement for a Popular Front, tallied between 215-221 seats.?

New ruling party interior minister Manuel Valls vowed that no time will be wasted in moving forward.

"We need to sort out this country's finances, to ensure we achieve a balanced budget by 2017, and at the same time pursue our priorities in terms of growth, employment, education, and security," he said, according to Reuters.

?Other notable election outcomes:

  • The far right National Front of Marine Le Pen won its first seats (2) since the 1980s, with one going to Ms. Le Pen?s niece, law student Marion Marechal-Le Pen. But the flamboyant Ms. Le Pen lost her bid for a seat in a closely contested race in Henin-Beaumont, a former mining region in the north. The National Front won 18 percent in the presidential race and is now the No. 3 party here.
  • Former Socialist presidential candidate S?gol?ne Royal lost a bitterly contested seat in La Rochelle. Ms. Royal, the former partner of Hollande and mother of his children, sought the seat over and against a popular local Socialist who refused to step aside. While the Socialist establishment, including Hollande, supported Royal, Hollande's current partner, Valerie Trierweiler, last week Tweeted her support of Royal's opponent, setting off a wave of media reaction and cafe-chat intrigue here.
  • Francois Bayrou, leader of France?s main centrist party Modem, was not restored to his seat. Mr. Bayrou was a popular figure on the center-right in 2007, but analysts say he might have been harmed by his endorsement of Hollande in the presidential run-off and his criticism of Mr. Sarkozy?s play for far-right voters during the presidential campaign.

Buy It Once: The Gear You'll Never Have to Replace

Cost: $140

That budget sleeping bag you bought last year at Walmart probably isn't going to make it past next summer. This high-end sleeping pad, the NEMO Tuo, is made from 75-denier stretch polyester laminated with a high-bond polymer film, which means it will last more than just a few seasons at the cabin. The construction here is key: There are two foam pads separated by a sheet of polyurethane. You can also add a pillow slipcover and a slipcover from NEMO to add extra comfort.

(AP) ? Jerry Sandusky opened his defense in his molestation trial Monday with character witnesses who defended his reputation, including a former Penn State coach who said he knew Sandusky took boys into showers but never saw him do anything wrong.

The six witnesses, one who called Sandusky a "local hero," did little to directly counter the testimony last week by eight young men who accused the former Penn State assistant football coach of sexually abusing them when they were children.

Judge John Cleland told jurors Sandusky's defense has about a day and a half left of testimony and that they could begin deliberations on the case as early as Thursday, a quicker schedule than had been expected.

Sandusky looked an Associated Press reporter in the eye and said nothing when asked if he planned to testify. Other possible defense witnesses to come include his wife, Dottie; and an expert who could discuss whether Sandusky has "histrionic personality disorder," which experts have called a personality disorder characterized by inappropriate sexual behavior and erratic emotions.

The list of potential witnesses also includes a physician who spoke with key prosecution witness Mike McQueary the night he said he saw Sandusky attack a child in a football team shower in 2001 and members of former football coach Joe Paterno's family, although it was unclear how they might fit into the defense case or whether they will be called.

Sandusky's arrest led the university trustees to fire Paterno as coach in November, saying his response to the 2001 report from McQueary showed a lack of leadership. Paterno died of cancer in January.

Dick Anderson, a longtime Penn State assistant and Sandusky friend who retired in January, testified that he and other members of the football staff were present when Sandusky brought young boys into the team's showers.

He said he never witnessed anything inappropriate.

"If Jerry would bring someone in with The Second Mile, they had been working out, for whatever reason they came in, it was not uncommon ... with the other coaches in the shower as well," Anderson said, referring to the charity for at-risk children Sandusky founded in 1977.

Anderson, who coached at Penn State from 1970 to 1983 and again from 1990 through the 2011 season, said adults and children often shower together at gyms. He noted, for example, that it's not unusual for him to be in the showers with boys at the YMCA.

Anderson also spoke in detail about the long hours of coaching and recruiting trips required of the job, which could lay the groundwork for a defense argument that accuser testimony about regular contact with Sandusky may be inaccurate or exaggerated.

Anderson said he did not know Sandusky had been barred by university administrators from taking children onto campus after the 2001 incident was reported by McQueary, although that was disclosed in court documents and has been widely and repeatedly reported since Sandusky's arrest.

When lead prosecutor Joe McGettigan asked him if that fact would surprise him, Anderson said yes.

Prosecutors claim Sandusky targeted his victims at The Second Mile, groomed them for abuse, then moved from touching and kissing to more severe forms of sexual abuse, including in some cases oral or anal sex. Sandusky has denied the allegations against him, acknowledging he showered with boys but saying he never molested them.

Earlier in the day, prosecutors told the judge they were dropping one of the 52 counts, that of felony unlawful contact with the accuser known as Victim 7. Prosecutor Frank Fina said the statute under which he was charged did not cover the time frame when the alleged act occurred.

The judge ruled against defense motions that charges were too vague or nonspecific to defend and that there isn't solid evidence of the ages of two accusers.

Prosecutors rested their case after calling their 21st witness, the mother of so-called Victim 9, a recent high school graduate who testified last week that Sandusky raped him in the basement of the coach's suburban home.

The woman said her son told her that Sandusky called him late one night after the first round of charges was filed in November, asking if he would be a character witness.

"He said that Jerry asked him to make an affidavit or some kind of statement on what kind of character or person he was," she said. "Why would he call my kid after he's being accused of things like this?"

In December, prosecutors brought more charges against Sandusky, alleging he'd had forced anal sex with the boy.

Victim 9's mother said the boy's laundry would often be short of underwear and he would claim he had thrown it away because he had an accident. Last week, the teen said Sandusky forced him to have anal sex that made him bleed.

In tearful testimony, the mother described gifts Sandusky gave her son, then added: "I wish he would just give him underwear to replace the underwear I could never find in my laundry."

The defense's case focused largely on Sandusky's reputation. Anderson said he was "well thought of in every regard," former Penn State assistant coach Booker Brooks called his reputation "exemplary, top-knotch," and local political consultant Brent Pasquinelli, who raised money for The Second Mile, called him "a local hero."

Besides Anderson, Brooks and Pasquinelli, three other witnesses testified for the defense Monday: a woman who ran a golf-related charity to which one accuser was recommended by Sandusky, a young man who knew Sandusky through The Second Mile and vouched for his reputation and a schoolteacher who said Sandusky seemed genuinely interested in helping one of the accusers in the case. None was on the stand for more than 10 minutes.

Tom Kline, a Philadelphia lawyer who represents one of the accusers, said he was served a defense subpoena on Monday, ordering him to produce a copy of the fee agreement he has made with Victim 5, along with copies of his interactions with reporters.

Loneliness in older individuals linked to functional decline, death

ScienceDaily (June 18, 2012) ? Loneliness in individuals over 60 years of age appears associated with increased risk of functional decline and death, according to a report published Online First by Archives of Internal Medicine, a JAMA Network publication.

In older persons, loneliness can be a common source of distress and impaired quality life, according to the study background.

Carla M. Perissinotto, M.D., M.H.S., of the University of California, San Francisco, and colleagues examined the relationship between loneliness and risk of functional decline and death in older individuals in a study of 1,604 participants in the Health and Retirement Study.

The participants (average age 71) were asked if they felt left out, isolated or a lack of companionship. Of the participants, 43.2 percent reported feeling lonely, which was defined as reporting one of the loneliness items at least some of the time, according to the study results.

Loneliness was associated with an increased risk of death over the six-year follow-up period (22.8 percent vs. 14.2 percent), the results indicate. Loneliness also was associated with functional decline, including participants being more likely to experience decline in activities of daily living (24.8 percent vs. 12.5 percent), develop difficulties with upper extremity tasks (41.5 percent vs. 28.3 percent) and difficulty in stair climbing (40.8 percent vs. 27.9 percent).

"Loneliness is a common source of suffering in older persons. We demonstrated that it is also a risk factor for poor health outcomes including death and multiple measures of functional decline," the authors comment.

The authors conclude their study could have important public health implications.

"Assessment of loneliness is not routine in clinical practice and it may be viewed as beyond the scope of medical practice. However, loneliness may be as an important of a predictor of adverse health outcomes as many traditional medical risk factors," the researchers note. "Our results suggest that questioning older persons about loneliness may be a useful way of identifying elderly persons at risk of disability and poor health outcomes."

Invited Commentary: What are We Really Measuring?

In an invited commentary, Emily M. Bucholz, M.P.H., and Harlan M. Krumholz, M.D., S.M., of the Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, Conn., write: "Social support -- few concepts in epidemiology have proven more elusive to define."

"As we look forward to future studies on social support, the importance of clarifying the mechanisms by which this amorphous concept influences health becomes clear," they continue.

"Loneliness is a negative feeling that would be worth addressing even if the condition had no health implications. Nevertheless, with regard to health implications, scientists examining social support should build on studies such as those published in this issue and be challenged to investigate mechanisms as well as practical interventions that can be used to address the social factors that undermine health," the authors conclude.
