The tiny devices, which they call "transient electronics," are made from silicon and silk. Silicon is, of course, a?normal material for electronics, but it is also a common organic element found in our own bodies, and small amounts of silicon are easily dissolved in water or bodily fluids. Modern manufacturing techniques allowed the team to make silicon circuits only tens of nanometers thick, meaning they are well within healthy quantities?to be ingested.

Circuits are usually mounted on plastic or some other non-soluble material. But on transient electronics, the circuit?board is made of silk protein extracted from silkworm cocoons, a material that is strong but also very biodegradable. Omenetto and his team managed to adjust its properties so they can control how long it takes for the silk to degrade ? meaning they can create devices that melt down after a day, a week, or more. Theoretically,?it could last for years,?Rogers told NBC News via email,?but the design the team has been working on was made for the two-week post-operative period.

They use wireless power ? harvesting energy from radio transmissions to operate?the circuits. Rogers said that they can do non-rechargeable batteries, too, but that work isn't published yet.

So far, they've put together a temperature monitor and a tiny camera, both of which could be used for a number of purposes in the medical establishment. The next step, aside from applying for the usual testing and approvals, is to make the devices responsive to things like light or pressure, so that they could be activated or perhaps even destroyed at the command of a doctor or patient.

Beyond the body, such biodegradable devices could also safely be introduced to natural environments without the need to recover them, and without the risk of polluting or poisoning local wildlife.

The research was made possible by a number of grants from DARPA, the NSF, the NIH, and others. The paper is entitled "A physically transient form of silicon electronics," and can be found in this week's edition of the journal Science.

Thousands of images from Australia's Great Barrier Reef and other coral locales are being stitched together into an eye-popping array of 360-degree panoramas for Google Maps' Street View feature?? but this million-dollar-plus project isn't just about pretty pictures. It's about sharing the wonders and the woes of the world's coral reefs with people around the globe.

"This will allow the 99.9 percent of the population who have never been diving to go on a virtual dive for the first time," said Richard Vevers, project director for the Catlin Seaview Survey.

In partnership with Google, the Seaview Survey has been mounting a series of expeditions to capture high-resolution imagery of the Great Barrier Reef and other coral reef locales. It's sponsored by Catlin Group Ltd., a global insurance group. The project went through a preview phase back in February, and since then, it has continued to ramp up. Even before the official unveiling, the Seaview Survey has gained more than 1.4 million fans on Google+.

"Now we are actually in full expedition mode," Vevers said. To celebrate Wednesday's official kickoff, the survey is staging its first public real-time dive at the Great Barrier Reef via a Google+ Hangout at 1:30 p.m. ET. It'll be the middle of the night in Australia, but it'll be getting toward midday at the Blue Ocean Film Festival in Monterey, Calif., where Vever and other Seaview Survey organizers are hanging out this week.

Here are some of the 360-degree, Street View-style goodies that are already available via Google Maps:

Vevers and his colleagues aim to take 50,000 shallow-reef pictures, using a specially designed SVII camera. When all those images are stitched together into a continuous skein, the 360-degree panoramas will let users navigate their own way through one long virtual Google Maps dive. There'll also be a deep-reef survey, conducted using picture-snapping robots.

Scientists plan to analyze the photos using image-recognition software to get a quick read on coral reef health.?That's a crucial issue for the decades ahead. Half of the ocean's coral communities have been lost over the past 40 years, said the survey's chief scientist, Ove Hoegh-Guldburg of the University of Queensland's Global Change Institute. The decline is due to a variety of causes, ranging from coastal water quality to overfishing to ocean warming and acidification, he said.

"The evidence of these changes is there, but people outside the scientific community don't understand the significance of those changes," Hoegh-Guldburg told me. "If we're going to tackle these global issues, we need everyone on the planet to understand what we are in danger of losing, and what we can do to stop the decline."

He said the Seaview Survey's biggest benefit will be to give people a greater appreciation of the world's coral reefs, whether they're Australian business executives or Russian grandmothers.

Sharing the seas' wonders
The Seaview Survey aims to conduct regular expeditions that can be shared via Hangouts and other live events. All the scientific data will be made public via an online Global Reef Record database, Hoegh-Guldburg said. He's also looking into ways to enlist volunteers to analyze coral reef pictures, an idea that's taken from the citizen-science playbooks for Zooniverse and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

The survey is due to focus on the Great Barrier Reef and the Coral Sea is due to run until the end of December, and then it'll move on to other locations around the globe, including Hawaii, the Philippines and Bermuda. Hoegh-Guldburg said the survey's tools and techniques are designed to be adapted easily for a wide range of coral reef settings ? including countries that haven't been able to assess their own coral reefs.

"Many of these countries know that their reefs are in trouble, but they don't know how much they're losing, or where they're losing the most," Hoegh-Guldburg said. "This can help them prioritize. If you don't prioritize, it's very hard to get traction."

The way he sees it, the Catlin Seaview Survey is coming just in time.

"Everybody is waking up to the realization that this is a critical decade," Hoegh-Guldburg said. "We're making decisions that could haunt us for hundreds of years if we don't get them right. It's now or never."?

Chicago teachers await vote that could end strike

CHICAGO (AP) ? Hundreds of delegates to the Chicago teachers union gathered Tuesday to debate a proposed contract, the first step before casting a critical vote that could end the city's first teachers strike in 25 years.

Two days after refusing to end the strike because they hadn't seen all the contract details, the 700-plus delegates met at a South Side union hall to go over the settlement offer point by point.

Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis said she wouldn't tell union delegates how to vote. But she said she would vote for the proposal if she were still teaching, calling it the best deal negotiators could get.

"I don't think it's a great deal," Lewis said. "I'm just more proud of our union. The contract is the contract. It's nothing that I take ownership over."

As they arrived for the meeting, many delegates were optimistic the strike would be called off. A few said they weren't sure.

Tanya Ellis an elementary school teacher, hoped for an end to the walkout.

"It's not the best contract. It's not the worst," Ellis said. "We need our kids back in school."

Journalists were not permitted inside the meeting, but reporters peering through windows could see delegates standing and cheering, raising hands and pumping fists. From the outside, it was impossible to know specifically what they were excited about.

Many teachers said they felt conflicted: They were eager to go back to work but determined to see their efforts through to the end.

"I'm desperately wanting to get back to my lab experiments with my kids," said Heath Davis, a seventh-grade science teacher who was picketing outside Goethe Elementary School on the city's West Side.

Davis was optimistic that Tuesday's vote could end the strike that has kept 350,000 students out of the classroom. But he said teachers still had concerns about the academic calendar, pensions and resources for special education, in addition to the more publicly discussed issues of tying teacher evaluations to student test scores and recalling laid-off teachers when schools close.

"We don't want to move too quickly," said Davis, a delegate who was consulting with other teachers at his school before deciding how to vote. "We want to make sure our questions are answered."

Tuesday's vote was not on the contract offer itself, but on whether to continue the strike. The contract must be submitted to a vote of the full union membership before it is formally ratified.

Some union delegates were taking straw polls of rank-and-file teachers to measure support for a settlement.

Craig Richmond, a counselor at Richard Yates Elementary School in northwest Chicago, voted to continue to the strike as a way to pressure the district on the closure of schools with poor performance or declining enrollment. The former music teacher has lost his job three times in such closures.

He described his action as a protest vote, but he recognized that continuing to strike could erode community support and do more harm than good.

"It's a huge gamble," he acknowledged. "The kids would lose out. It doesn't feel good to me to have that position."

Union leaders say trust has become a critical factor after months of strained relations with Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the school board, and that Emanuel's effort to get a judge to order the teachers back to class could become an obstacle.

But teachers have begun feeling pressure to decide quickly on the tentative contract that labor and education experts ? and even some union leaders ? called a good deal for the union after a long stretch of setbacks nationally for organized labor.

"It's risky to extend the strike when everyone was expecting the strike to be over," said Richard Kahlenberg of the Century Foundation, a nonpartisan think tank in Washington.

Irked by the union's two-day delay in voting on whether to send children back to school, Emanuel took the matter into court Monday. A judge has called a hearing for Wednesday to rule on the city's request for an injunction ordering the teachers back to work.

Both sides have only released summaries of the proposed agreement. But outside observers said the tentative contract appears to be a win for the union's 25,000 teachers.

While teachers in San Francisco haven't gotten an across-the-board raise in years, for example, Chicago teachers are in line for raises in each of the proposed deal's three years with provisions for a fourth. In Cleveland, teachers recently agreed to the same kind of evaluation system based in part on student performance that Chicago has offered.

"The district went past the halfway mark," said Kate Walsh, president of the National Council on Teacher Quality. "They got a pretty good deal."

Some union members in Chicago praised the school district's move on what percentage of test scores will be factored into teacher evaluations, reducing it from 45 percent to the 30 percent set as the minimum by state law. The deal also includes an appeals process to contest evaluations. The new evaluations would be phased in over the length of the contract.

The tentative contract calls for a 3 percent raise in its first year and 2 percent for two years after that, along with increases for experienced teachers. While many teachers are upset it did not restore a 4 percent pay raise Emanuel rescinded earlier this year, the contract if adopted would keep Chicago teachers among the highest-paid in the country.

In Chicago, the starting salary is roughly $49,000, and average salary is around $76,000 a year.

The city also won some things from the union in the proposed settlement. Emanuel gets the longer school day he wanted, and principals will have say over who gets hired at their schools, something the union fought. The district will be required to give some preference to teachers who are displaced, and the school district will have to maintain a hiring list and make sure that at least half of hires are displaced teachers.

"We made a lot of progress," said Susanne McCannon, who teaches art at Whitney M. Young Magnet High School. "I'd like to be back in the classroom, but I want to be back in the classroom with the best situation possible."

Fasting makes brain tumors more vulnerable to radiation therapy

A new study from USC researchers is the first to show that controlled fasting improves the effectiveness of radiation therapy in cancer treatments, extending life expectancy in mice with aggressive brain tumors.

Prior work by USC professor of gerontology and biological sciences Valter Longo, corresponding author on the study and director of the Longevity Institute at the USC Davis School of Gerontology, has shown that short-term fasting protects healthy cells while leaving cancer cells vulnerable to the toxic effects of chemotherapy.

The latest study, appearing online once the embargo lifts in PLOS One, is the first to show that periods of fasting appear to have the same augmenting effect on radiation therapy in treating gliomas, the most commonly diagnosed brain tumor. Gliomas have a median survival of less than two years.

"With our initial research on chemotherapy, we looked at how to protect patients against toxicity. With this research on radiation, we're asking, what are the conditions that make cancer most susceptible to treatment? How can we replicate the conditions that are least hospitable to cancer?" Longo said.

Longo and his co-investigators studied the combination of fasting with radiation therapy and with the chemotherapy drug Temozolomide, currently the standard treatment for the treatment of brain tumors in adults after an attempt at surgical removal.

They found that controlled short-term fasting in mice, no more than 48 hours each cycle, improved the effectiveness of radiation and chemotherapy in treating gliomas. Despite the extremely aggressive growth of the type of brain tumor studied, more than twice as many mice who fasted and received radiation therapy survived to the end of the trial period than survived with radiation alone or fasting alone.

"The results demonstrate the beneficial role of fasting in gliomas and their treatment with standard chemotherapy and radiotherapy," the researchers write, who say the results indicate the benefits of short-term, controlled fasting for humans receiving treatment for brain tumors.

Longo cautions that patients should consult with their oncologist before undertaking any fasting: "You want to balance the risks. You have to do it right. But if the conditions are such that you've run out of options, short-term fasting may represent an important possibility for patients."

Child deaths fell below 7 million in 2011

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? The number of children under the age of five who die annually fell to less than 7 million in 2011, but around 19,000 boys and girls around the world are still dying every day from largely preventable causes, the U.N. children's agency said in a report released Wednesday night.

The report by the United Nations Children's Fund said that four-fifths of under-five deaths last year occurred in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. More than half the pneumonia and diarrhea deaths ? which together account for almost 30 percent of under-five deaths worldwide ? occur in just four countries: Congo, India, Nigeria and Pakistan, it said.

"Given the prospect that these regions, especially sub-Saharan Africa, will account for the bulk of the world's births in the next years, we must give new impetus to the global momentum to reduce under-five deaths," UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake said in the report.

He said youngsters from disadvantaged and marginalized families in poor and fragile nations are the most likely to die before their fifth birthday, but their lives can be saved with vaccines, adequate nutrition and basic medical and maternal care.

"The world has the technology and know-how to do so," Lake said. "The challenge is to make these available to every child."

UNICEF said the rate of decline in under-five deaths has drastically accelerated in the last decade, from 1.8 percent per year during the 1990s to 3.2 percent per year between 2000 and 2011.

"There is much to celebrate," Lake said. "More children now survive their fifth birthday than ever before ? the global number of under-five deaths has fallen from around 12 million in 1990 to an estimated 6.9 million in 2011."

In 2010, there were 7.6 million under-5 deaths.

The report underscores that a country's location and economic status need not be a barrier to reducing child deaths.

Low income countries such as Bangladesh, Liberia and Rwanda, middle income countries including Brazil, Mongolia and Turkey, and high income countries such as Oman and Portugal have all made dramatic gains, lowering their under-five mortality rates by more than two-thirds between 1990 and 2011, the report said.

But UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Geeta Rao Gupta stressed that there is "unfinished business" and it is not just about the number of child deaths.

"Behind every statistic is an unseen child, and a grieving mother and father," she said. "A child's death is all the more tragic when caused by a disease that can easily be prevented. That's why we have this global movement to recommit to child survival and renew the promise to end child deaths. This decline shows we can make this happen."

Under the influence: Reminders of money impact consumer decision-making

ScienceDaily (Sep. 11, 2012) ? When reminded of money (not cost), consumers are more likely to evaluate a new product based on its primary features or brand name, according to a new study in the Journal of Consumer Research.

"Money and symbols of money are ubiquitous in our daily consumer environment, and money is linked to social resources such as security, status, power, confidence, and freedom. Mere reminders of money have the potential to signal confidence and strength and thereby impact consumers when making decisions," write authors Jochim Hansen (University of Salzburg), Florian Kutzner (University of Heidelberg), and Michaela W?nke (University of Mannheim).

Consumers encounter money or symbols of money all the time. We earn, save, spend, or possibly lose money. We physically handle bills and coins. We are reminded of money by proverbs (e.g., A penny saved is a penny earned), songs (e.g., Money, Money, Money), and movie titles (e.g., The Color of Money). Given the importance of money in our lives, it is important to understand the psychological implications of such frequent reminders of money.

In a series of studies, the authors found that reminders of money caused consumers to think more abstractly and focus on the primary features of a product instead of its secondary features. For example, we might wonder if a television has great picture or sound quality and not pay any attention to the warranty. Or we might think about whether a yogurt is healthy or tasty but ignore the package design. Additionally, consumers reminded of money are more likely to evaluate a new product based on its brand name instead of its individual features. For example, we might think that a new bike by Mercedes must be good because Mercedes is a good brand and ignore its actual features.

"Our studies show that reminders of money influence consumer decision-making. Consumers should keep this in mind when choosing products, because they may overlook certain features when reminded of money," the authors conclude.

Amanda Bynes Drives With Suspended License, Gets Pulled Over Again Obviously

Troubled star and horrendous driver Amanda Bynes was pulled over in L.A. for driving with no headlights on, but was somehow let go with just a warning.

Clearly the cop doesn't read celebrity gossip.

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ that Bynes, who recently had her license suspended, was warned by the police and let go without arrest of incident.

Had they run Amanda's license, records would have likely shown that it had just been suspended due to a pair of misdemeanor hit-and-run charges.

Bynes' refusal to take a breathalyzer test after being arrested for DUI in April would also count as a red flag, along with all the other traffic incidents.

It's unclear if the license has already been reinstated, but given the list of infractions by Bynes, that seems very unlikely in a short period of time.

Way to go cops, and Amanda.

I recently authored a whitepaper for the?DMA on email metrics??and would like to share here the key content. The whitepaper covers common email metrics, how to pick the right metrics and risks in using metrics.

Knowing the risks in using metrics is important, as metrics are only a tool and no tool is perfect. Knowing what a metrics doesn?t tell you is valuable too.

Consider this scenario: a lower campaign open rate that delivers higher revenue. As Einstein said??not everything that can be counted, counts?,?in this case just how valuable is counting opens?

That?s not just theoretical either; lower email campaign opens can deliver increased revenue.

• When considering what metrics are important the questions to answer are:
• What is the objective that needs to be measured?
• What metrics best represent this objective?
• Who is going to use this metric?
• How is it going to be used?
• Who will make the measurement?
• How is the measurement going to be made?

The key metrics are those that are?important to the business, typically those that measure business impact in terms of revenue and customers. In some cases immediate revenue may not be the objective or measureable, in which case a proxy such as clicks or other conversion goal such as online form completed might be used.

If the metric is for the CFO or in support of a business case then revenue based metrics speak the loudest. If the CFO has two investment choices, one with the case of 5% more revenue and one with 25% higher open rate its clear where the money will go.

Metrics that don?t measure direct business success have their place and use. It?s about the right metric for the right job. For the person looking after deliverability they will want bounce and spam complaints rates, whilst these metrics are of little interest to anyone else.

The standard email campaign metrics found in many broadcast solutions are unlikely to provide metrics tightly aligned to marketing objectives. For instance what if the marketing objective is to increase the number of one time customers who make a repeat purchase? Or the number of customers who renew a service contract??Create specific metrics?that measure the marketing objective.

To consider Einstein?s point that not everything that counts can be counted, I?d like to round off with some thoughts about what we can?t easily measure in email:

• How much affect an un-opened email has on subsequent emails. When someone sees the brand name and subject line, how much of an impression is left? We know that unopened emails have value too but have trouble measuring this.
• The influence of email on offline activity. That email can and does nudge activity offline is known.
• The attribution of email when it didn?t result in an immediate click. A DMA survey showed that customers are interested in the contents of an email will often not directly click on it but follow up on a website indirectly.
• The number of emails that reach the inbox and that were seen.

Deliver the ?right cost with the right quality,? he said. He mentioned the private sector as advocates of reform that, in partnership with good governance, would lead to quality infrastructure.

INDIANAPOLIS -- As outbreaks of preventable diseases such as whooping cough and measles increase in the United States, researchers from the Regenstrief Institute and Indiana University School of Medicine are investigating whether altruism, known to influence adults' decisions to immunize themselves, influences parental decisions to vaccinate their children.

"If enough people are immunized against a particular disease, it prevents outbreaks of that disease and protects the community. This is known as herd immunity, and it's a very important benefit of childhood immunization," said Regenstrief Institute affiliated scientist S. Maria Finnell, M.D., M.S., IU School of Medicine assistant professor of pediatrics. "But as we are seeing more vaccine-hesitant parents, we need to better understand the factors that influence parents' decisions to immunize their children so that pediatricians can effectively communicate to them the importance of the recommended shots."

As a first step in their investigation, the researchers, led by Dr. Finnell, conducted a systematic evidence-based analysis of peer-reviewed studies on parental decision-making regarding child immunization and found no study designed with the primary focus on "benefit to others" as a motivating factor. Their findings are reported in "The Role of Herd Immunity in Parents' Decision to Vaccinate Children: A Systematic Review," published in the September issue of Pediatrics, the official peer-reviewed journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

"Studies have shown that benefit to others is an effective motivator for adults to vaccinate themselves," said Regenstrief Institute investigator Stephen M. Downs, M.D., M.S., associate professor of pediatrics and director of Children's Health Services Research at the IU School of Medicine. "However, our review determined that it is not known whether the role of herd immunity -- immunizing to benefit the community -- plays a role in parents' decision regarding immunizing their children."

Now that they have reviewed the medical literature and found it inconclusive, Drs. Finnell and Downs and their co-investigators are completing a study to determine whether varying how immunization messages are framed influences vaccine-hesitant parents.

(Reuters) - Money manager Fidelity saw a surge of cash into a Southeast Asian equities mutual fund this summer, helping it leap past $2 billion in size and overtake a long-time leading rival product from J.P. Morgan .

Fidelity's ASEAN fund has attracted estimated net inflows of $460 million in the last three months alone to become, for the first time in more than six years, the largest fund focusing on the region, data from Thomson Reuters Lipper showed.

The inflows underscore the popularity of Southeast Asia at a time when key emerging market economies are seeing outflows. The region of 600 million people has a combined economy of $2 trillion that is boosted by domestic consumption, public spending and a growing middle class.

It also shows that Southeast Asian investors are getting choosier, and gravitating towards better-performing funds.

"It's been a good story to market," Medha Samant, a Hong Kong-based investment director at Fidelity Worldwide Investment, said in a telephone interview.

"Clients are increasingly feeling that ASEAN markets are in a much stronger position to weather a global economic downturn compared to 10 years ago," she said.

Assets of Southeast Asia-focused funds tracked by Lipper stood at $7.8 billion at the end of July, the highest since December 2007. Other offshore funds investing into individual countries in the region managed a further $16 billion.

More than 50 mutual funds focus on Southeast Asia stock investments, nearly double from five years ago, and the inflows for Fidelity and some others such as Japan's Daiwa will help draw investor attention to the region as other Asian countries such as China and India slow. The inflows could ultimately help deepen the region's relatively illiquid markets.

Offshore equity funds dedicated to China and India saw a combined $2.4 billion of net outflows, according to Lipper data. Even offshore equity funds investing in emerging market such as Brazil have seen net outflows worth $826 million in the first seven months of 2012.

WEAK RETURNS

A prolonged period of weak performance has driven some investors away from J.P. Morgan Asset Management's $2 billion JF ASEAN Fund, leading to an estimated $78 million in outflows in 2012 and benefitting the rival Fidelity product, Lipper data showed.

The Fidelity Funds-ASEAN has grabbed $814 million, nearly three-fourths of the estimated $1 billion of net inflows into funds investing in all of Southeast Asia this year.

"This may be attributed to the ability of Fidelity's fund to consistently deliver better returns than the JF fund, particularly since the first quarter of 2011," said Eric Wong, head of Lipper Hong Kong research.

Fidelity's fund has gained 14.3 percent in the year to end-August, helped by a 25 percent jump in top holdings such as Singapore banks DBS Group and United Overseas Bank .

By comparison, its benchmark MSCI South East Asia index is up 13.6 percent. The J.P Morgan fund trails with gains of 12.8 percent during the period, Lipper data showed. The fund also lags its benchmark over one-, three- and five-year periods.

Fidelity's fund managed $2.4 billion at the end of August, while the one from J.P. Morgan had just over $2 billion. They are the only two offshore ASEAN-focused stock funds with assets of more than $2 billion.

"We saw some profit-taking in the first quarter since ASEAN economies have performed well since the global financial crisis," Pauline Ng, a managing director at J.P. Morgan Asset Management, said in an e-mail. "Over the second quarter ending June 30th, we have seen net inflows again."

MEXICO CITY (AP) ? The man who led Mexico's main leftist party in the past two presidential elections announced Sunday he is leaving it behind and may start a new party, throwing uncertainty over the future of the nation's political left.

Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador told supporters at a rally at Mexico City's main plaza that he is leaving the Democratic Revolution Party "on the best of terms." He also announced he is leaving the smaller Labor Party and Citizens' Movement, which also backed him in the July presidential election, when he finished second.

Lopez Obrador said he will begin consultations that would create a new party out of another, less formal organization that backed him, the Movement for National Regeneration.

The motives for the break were not clear, but it could complicate efforts for the left to rally again around a single candidate as it has in every election since 1988.

Lopez Obrador has been the most prominent figure within Democratic Revolution in recent years, one of only two people it has ever run for the presidency since forming in the wake of the fraud-tainted 1988 election.

Still, he has not been able to dominate the structure of the party, which has suffered through bitter internal feuds, many of which Lopez Obrador's faction has lost.

Lopez Obrador, who turns 59 in November, was one of many political figures who abandoned the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party in 1988 to support the candidacy of Cuauhtemoc Cardenas. That alliance of populist insurgents from the ruling party with a collection of small socialist parties led to the formation of Democratic Revolution.

Lopez Obrador was a popular Mexico City mayor before seeking the presidency in 2006. He lost that election by less than a percentage point and his supporters then staged months of disruptive street protests, alleging fraud gave the victory to National Action Party candidate Felipe Calderon.

This year Lopez Obrador finished about seven points back, losing to PRI candidate Enrique Pena Nieto. While his supporters again have alleged election irregularities, the protests have been more subdued.

Police estimated about 38,000 people were ion the crowd cheering Lopez Obrador on the city's Zocalo. Some were ready to jump ship with him.

"I'll go where Andres Manuel goes," said Maria Petra, a 42-year-old housewife.

"There was the PRD until a while ago. Now, no," said another spectator, Efren Garcia, 31.
