Scientists discover nerves control iridescence in squid's remarkable 'electric skin'
ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? Squid's colorful, changeable skin enables the animal -- and their close relatives, cuttlefish and octopus -- to display extraordinary camouflage, the speed and diversity of which is unmatched in the animal kingdom.
But how squid control their skin's iridescence, or light-reflecting property, which is responsible for the animal's sparkly rainbow of color, has been unknown.
In a new study, MBL (Marine Biological Laboratory) researchers Paloma Gonzalez Bellido and Trevor Wardill and their colleagues report that nerves in squid skin control the animal's spectrum of shimmering hues -- from red to blue -- as well as their speed of change. The work marks the first time neural control of iridescence in an invertebrate species has been demonstrated.
Squid skin is extraordinary because it has two ways to produce color and pattern. Pigmented organs called chromatophores create patterns with yellow, red, and brown colors. Underneath the pigments, iridophores, aggregations of iridescent cells in the skin, reflect light and add blue, green, and pink colors to the overall appearance of the skin. Collectively these two groups of skin elements can create spectacular optical illusions with patterns of color, brightness, and contrast change.
"For 20 years we have been wondering how the dynamically changeable iridescence is controlled by the squid," says study co-author Roger Hanlon. "At long last we have clean evidence that there are dedicated nerve fibers that turn on and tune the color and brightness of iridophores. It is not an exaggeration to call this "electric skin." The complex nerve network distributed throughout the squid's skin instantly coordinates tens of thousands of chromatophores with iridescent reflectors for rapidly changing behaviors ranging from camouflage to signaling."
Working with longfin inshore squid (Doryteuthis pealeii), the researchers took a new approach to investigating the mystery behind the iridophore control mechanism. By tracing a highly branched network of nerves and stimulating them electrically, they found that they could activate progressive color shifts from red and orange to yellow, green, and blue in just 15 seconds. The findings suggest that the specific color of each iridophore, as well as speed of change, is controlled by the nervous system, as is spatial chromatophore patterning that occurs in the skin layer just above.
How squid choose and hold particular skin colors to help camouflage themselves remains unknown and is particularly interesting because the animals are completely colorblind.
"One possibility is the animals do not care about the color of the iridophores, but shifting the color from red to blue will dramatically increase the relative brightness of iridophores," says Wardill. "This is because squid see predominantly blue light. Blue light is especially important in the ocean as it penetrates best into deeper water."
The work was funded by grants from the Office of Naval Research (ONR), Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), and Air Force Office of Scientific Research.

Once driver of 'Cain Train,' Herman Cain now on board for Romney
One-time GOP primary front-runner Herman Cain, who exited the race amid spiraling allegations of sexual infidelity, hears no call from the campaign trail after his failure to make it all the way to this week's Republican convention in Tampa, Fla., he said today.
"No, I don't [miss campaigning,]" Cain, a conservative radio host and former pizza-chain CEO who momentarily led the pack of GOP candidates before dropping out in December, told Terry Moran of "Nightline."
"It's always bittersweet when you compete in anything, but I said from the very beginning, whoever gets the nomination, I am going to support them fully," Cain said on the sidelines of the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla.
Cain, who briefly tapped into a party then frustrated with Mitt Romney, was not invited to speak at the convention, a snub he says doesn't offend him.
"I'm not going to be participating with the formal convention program, but it's not about me," he told Moran. "It's about giving exposure to some young stars who are running for office."
Cain's road to endorsing Romney, set to be nominated later this week, was a long one. After dropping out, Cain, 66, initially endorsed "the American people," before throwing his support more directly to former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. It was not until May that Cain endorsed Romney.
"I said some tough things about [Romney] and I challenged him on his 59-point economic plan; he's now reduced the number of points in his economic plan so he's listening," Cain said of Romney, morphing an attack line he once used on the stump.
"He didn't get to nine yet, but he's moving in the right direction," the former Godfather's Pizza CEO quipped.
Cain's support skyrocketed when he introduced the catchy "9-9-9" tax plan that would have replaced most taxes with a 9 percent flat tax on business transactions, income and sales.
Cain praised Romney's pick of Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate. "I think it has injected some enthusiasm," he said of the decision.
Cain, the only black GOP candidate, said that despite the lack of black delegates on the convention floor, there were plenty of black conservatives in the Republican Party.
"I happen to believe that the party has more traction with black voters than meets the eye," he said.
"It takes a lot of time and personal commitment to try and become a delegate with either the Republican Party or the Democrat Party. It takes a lot of time and a lot of resources. And so as a result, you don't see as many black Americans," he said.
Cain said it was the Democrats, not the Republicans, who had belittled the concerns of black Americans and were playing into the country's basest fears about race.
"The Democrats are the ones that are making white people feel anxious about the race card in America. The Democrats are desperate. And when they're desperate, they go back to their old playbook. Class warfare. The race card," Cain told Moran.
Cain, who was accused at the time of his campaign of running just to sell books and promote his radio show, said he is still angry about the allegations of infidelity and impropriety leveled at him.
"I'm still a little angry about it. I'll be perfectly honest with you; I am human," he said, adding that he believed the attacks were coordinated and politically motivated.
"It's just those that were behind it were very good at covering up their fingerprints, such that it's difficult to determine exactly," he said. "But it was absolutely politically motivated."

Backers who donated $95 will receive a free Ouya console that is projected to be delivered sometime in March, 2013.
People are getting so excited about Ouya because it is open source. That means games can be downloaded for free, developers will be given access to the console?s source code and money can be made through in-app purchases and subscription based models ? so you only have to pay if you?re looking for vanity items or on-going content. Gamers will even be given easy access to the machines hardware where they can make modifications to their heart?s desire and all of this in a minute little package.
When it finally ships the Ouya will be no larger than a Rubik?s Cube, meaning you can easily sling it in a bag and take it wherever you go. It has space for up to four controllers and will output graphics at 1080p using a modified NVIDIA ULP GeForce GPU. The operating system is an Android 4.0, more commonly known as Ice Cream Sandwich.
This mixture of software and hardware is typically found in modern tablets and smartphones and for that reason you should expect graphics to be within the same ballpark. They certainly won?t be as powerful as the current generation of consoles. That said, if you take a look at the Wii, clever design and enjoyable gameplay will always overcome any graphical limitation. You?ve just got to decide whether you trust the developers to do so.
Perhaps one way to overcome its limitations is with the cloud gaming service OnLive which will be available from launch. For those of you familiar OnLive you?ll know it lets you stream AAA games on machines that don?t have the processing power to handle the demand.
The Ouya will also support the open-source media portal XBMC, and many people are expecting there to be support for TV and movie streaming services like Netflix. So whilst the Ouya is being touted as a gaming console it?s safe to say there will be a large number of media services that will make it a lot more versatile than just a games console.
With over 63, 400 backers we can assume the Ouya will find its self a little niche. For 70 odd pounds it?s a completely inexpensive games console that will double up as a media portal and web browser, streaming services like BBC iPlayer. And of course all the Android apps that are already available can be ported over.
All in all, it?s difficult to say whether the Ouya will be any good. The open source nature of the thing is certainly alluring, but then again, isn?t it just the innards of a mobile phone stuck into a box. I guess we?ll find out in time.

Arlington, VA -???For the Second Amendment community, there really is no contest in making a choice between Romney and Obama in the presidential election,? gun rights expert John M. Snyder said here today.
?The Romney-Ryan ticket is far superior to the Obama-Biden ticket on right to keep and bear arms issues as well as on other matters of great concern to millions of American voters,? he explains in this video.
Snyder notes some voters who oppose the Obama administration have expressed some dismay that Mitt Romney is not conservative enough or similar enough to their thinking on some issues.
?However,? says Snyder, ?it?s important to approach a voting decision with a mature adult attitude. On issues regarding the individual Second Amendment civil right to keep and bear arms, economic stability and prosperity, religious freedom and respect for the rights of conscience, and the honor of God Himself, there really is no doubt as to which alternative is the preferable one.
?Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are far superior to Barack Obama and Joe Biden on these and other matters. It?s time to rock and roll with Romney and Ryan.?

iOS 6 preview: Shared Photo Streams
Photo Stream debuted in iOS 5 as part of iCloud and while it offered some nifty automatic backup and sync store and push features, it lacked a lot of the sharing and gallery features that made Mobile Me so family friendly. Now, with iOS 6, Apple is adding sharing back to their cloud photo solution, and while it's not the same as before, it could be just as social.
Here's how Apple describes Shared Photo Streams.
Now you can share just the photos you want, with just the people you choose. Simply select photos from the Photos app, tap the Share button, choose who you want to share your photos with, and they?re on their way. Friends using iCloud on an iOS 6 device or a Mac running Mountain Lion get the photos delivered immediately in the Photos app or iPhoto. You can even view shared photo streams on Apple TV. If the folks you're sharing with aren?t using an Apple device, they can view your photos on the web. People can like individual photos and make comments. And you can share as much as you want: Your shared photo streams don?t count against your iCloud storage, and they work over Wi-Fi and cellular networks.
And, based on what Apple has shown off to date, here's how it works:
- From your Photo Stream album, select the photos you want to share.
- Choose the contacts you want to share the Photo Stream photos with.
- A push notification will notify your contacts of the shared Photo Stream photo.
- Shared Photo Stream photos appear in albums in the iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad photo album.
- Shared Photo Stream photos appear in the Photo Stream section of iPhoto and Aperture on Mac OS X.
- Shared Photo Stream photos can be also be viewed in a web browser, including on Windows PCs.
- Shared Photo Stream photos appear in the Photo Stream section of Apple TV as well.
While it doesn't work the same way the old MobileMe Galleries did, Shared Photo Stream do provide some interesting functionality all their own. The question is, with the ability to share photos already built into popular social networks like Facebook and Twitter, and services like Instagram and Path, does anyone really need Photo Streams to be shared as well? Perhaps, especially for those who don't really want to be social with their photos, but who only want to share them directly with a few friends and family members.
