Florida Gators coach Will Muschamp says team will use Jacoby Brissett and Jeff Driskel as QBs in season opener

Gators to use two QBs

Florida will play both sophomore quarterbacks in its season opener against Bowling Green, coach Will Muschamp said Friday.

Jacoby Brissett and Jeff Driskel have been competing since the spring for the starting job, and that competition will now continue into at least the first week of the season.

?Both guys will play in the first game,? Muschamp said. ?They both deserve the right to play. They?ve earned that, and they both deserve the right to start. They both have had really good camps.?

Muschamp said both have near identical statistics through fall camp and that the distribution of snaps in the game and how they will be divided ? whether it be by quarter, half or drive ? has yet to be determined.

Muschamp said he came to the conclusion to play both in the season opener after the team?s second scrimmage. A third scrimmage scheduled for Tuesday was rained out.

?Again, we can win with both guys. I?ve said that all along,? Muschamp said. ?Nothing has changed my opinion through this camp, and how these guys have competed and managed our team. We?ve tried to put them in tough situations and they?ve both handled it well. I think as we work into competition on game day, we?ll see if there is some separation. I think that?s the next step.?

Injury report

Offensive tackle Matt Patchan (pectoral strain) will miss the season opener.

Junior Buck linebacker Ronald Powell (ACL) has started cutting and changing direction, part of his last phase of rehab. Freshman offensive tackle D.J. Humphries (MCL) is expected to return to practice Tuesday or Wednesday, Muschamp said. And safety De?Ante Saunders is not practicing because of a pulled hamstring.
